The ELA technology standard that I chose was for the 11th and 12th grades. I think that the standard that is most important is to integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in different media or formats. This means that the students are looking at sources from different outlets as well as different kinds of sources. This means you were gathering resources for news outlets, databases, research papers, Studies and so much more. It is imperative that students have a variety of sources and credible resources. I thought you feel prepared to implement the standard based on my current skill set because of my years of working on a newspaper as well as research and other classes. It has always been emphasized to me that I need to be careful what sources I use and make sure that I am using a variety of them.
Coupling along with that I also think that the validity, reliability, bias, authenticity, and quality of Internet resources should be important to students. From the CPALMS Educator Toolkit, I think one of The most important tools is the selection of resources. Students must first identify if the source is valid and germane to what they are researching. They need to find out if this is a reliable resource and if the writer is credible and of sound mind. Students must be able to identify if the resource has a bias and if that influences the effectiveness of the resource. They need to find out if the resource is authentic and does not plagiarize any of the information. Lastly, the quality of the resource is very important, The language used and the reliability of the website or database should be both factors in if a source should be used.
I think it is very important for teachers to be proficient in being able to conduct Internet searches. As the years go on more and more aspects of teaching move online and many of the activities and school work that teachers are giving out are online using online resources. Being that my generation grew up with access to the Internet, we have a great advantage in terms of knowing how to use it correctly and being effective users. Skills that we have learned this week that I believe that I will use moving forward are being selective about resources and being more skeptical about where these resources are coming from. I think that one skill that was not introduced in the course that I use when conducting research is making sure the author is credible. Especially when looking at essays and research papers making sure the author is a credible source is very important.
Hello, Shannon!
ReplyDeleteI am really glad that you stressed the importance of educators knowing how to conduct Internet searches. I agree that as the years go by, technology will become even more embedded into our society. Therefore, knowing how to navigate the Internet is a must. As someone who grew up in the digital age, I am also aware that we are at an advantage. We have been exposed to all sorts of gadgets and devices since we were children. I am working very hard to become more proficient in softwares - like Microsoft Word - so I can be of greater help to my future students!
Hey Shannon! I am so glad to hear that you considered the quality of the toolkit resource! When picking mine, I considered that as well. I found that the tutorial videos were a bit slow and unengaging, which could lead to students tuning it out. I would not want my students to feel as though I was giving them busy work so I choose a lesson plan. Your resource sounds interesting!
ReplyDeleteHi Shannon!
ReplyDeleteI like how much you focused on the importance of making sure students know how to evaluate and gather diverse sources, it really is one of the most important skills that students - or anyone really - can be taught. Especially most recently, a lot of people seem to get their information from a lot of questionable places, and they don't really give it much thought and just take it at face value, so these kind of standards should definitely be a priority.
